Feathered Friends

A quick post featuring some photos of my two budgies, Mr. Green and Miss Blue, since I don’t think I’ve shared any photos of them yet. Mr. Green (the greenish-yellow one) was found by a team of researchers after the intense storms that swept through DC last summer; Miss Blue joined the flock a few months later (obtained in a more traditional way… purchased from a pet store). They have since become close companions — feeding, preening, and taking care of each other. Here they are enjoying a breakfast of millet, followed by a nice preen and a nap.

It has been interesting to observe their interactions — especially as a person who owned a single budgie for 10 years (who was my definitive childhood pet). That budgie, named Perry, bonded very strongly with me and would spend almost all of its time out of the cage sitting on my shoulder or head. Although these budgies will eat out of our hands, they have bonded pretty strongly with one other, and spend most of their time together as opposed to with us. I have to say that being a witness to their companionship, and being able to watch them preen, feed (yes, it involves regurgitation), and snuggle with each other is almost as satisfying as having one bonded to you. Basically, it’s a whole new kind of cute overload that I have never experienced before. So happy to have them both. Just had to share!

Cheers,

Sara
